Tips on cutting your baby's fingernails.
As a first time mother I was scared to death the first time I had to cut my sons fingernails. Those suckers need cut almost as soon as the baby is born. The first time I cut his nails I was so nervous that I was shaking and of course he was trying to pull away, I actually ended up knicking the end of his finger. When the little drop of blood came to the top I started crying. I just felt horrible. He never even made a peep. So I figured that I would point out a few tips to help make this easier for other mothers. 1. Talk to your baby. Make this a fun experience. With my son now, I just talk to him and tell him how good he's being and I try to keep him focused on me rather than not liking what's happening. 2. Make funny noises. When you clip the nail, make a funny sound. Laugh. Get your baby to laughing with you. This will also help your baby understand that this practice is not scary or bad while at the same time, you and your baby are having a fun bonding experience. 3. Be fast and precise. Try to do this quickly and efficiently while being safe so not to cut his/her finger. The faster you can do it, the easier this project will be. Babies have almost no attention span so you can't spend 10 minutes on each finger. Okay, so for the recap, talk and keep your baby focused. Make it a fun and positive experience with funny noises. Lastly, be fast. Don't spend forever just cutting finger nails. You have more important things to do, like giving hugs and kisses. |
